squad. what the teens are accused of doing before this that got them in trouble. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. new tonight, a brash home invasion in san francisco's richmond district three men with a gun chased a woman into her home near the intersection of 31st avenue and clemente street around 6:30. a neighbor tells us when the woman's father got to the house she screamed don't come in, but it was too late. the robbers got away with a wallet, diamond earrings, a watch and a gold chain. no one was hurt. well, a second straight saturday where the nfl is making news for all the wrong reasons. last week a kansas city chief killed his girlfriend before taking his own life. and this morning, another nfl player is in trouble with the law. cbs reporter teresa garcia reports. >> reporter: skid marks, line the texas roadway where police say dallas cowboy josh brent lost control of his car killing

a team mitt. >> it appears as if he was traveling at a high rate of speed at which time his vehicle touched or impacted the outside curb of the service road causing his vehicle to flip at least one time. >> reporter: police say brent was driving drunk when he crashed his 2007 mercedes early saturday morning. the defensive lineman is charged with intoxication manslaughter for the death of 25-year-old jerry brown a member of the team's practice squad. investigators say brown was unresponsive when they arrived. >> when our officers arrived on scene, mr. brent was removing -- or dragging mr. brown from the vehicle. >> reporter: brent and brown were college teammates at the university of illinois. the two were reunited in october when the cowboys signed brown after the indianapolis colts released him. in a statement, cowboys' owner jerry jones said --

>> reporter: news of the deadly accident stunned cowboys' fans. >> man, that's sad to hear. i mean -- life plays out sometimes like you don't plan it. >> reporter: but many say they are standing by their team. >> i love my cowboys. i love my cowboys. and i'm rooting for them and i'm hoping everything turns out okay. >> reporter: the team arrived in cincinnati saturday ahead of their game against the bengals on sunday. teresa garcia, cbs news. >> a standoff between police and an armed man barricaded inside a jack in the box ended with the suspect being shot. around 1:00 this afternoon, police say the man took two women hostage after he tried to rob the restaurant. after four hours police sharp shooter opened fire on the suspect and both hostages were traumatized but made it out safely. >> it's very unfortunate it had to end this way and the safety of those inside the restaurant as well as the community

surrounding the restaurant was just paramount. and the officers were forced to take action. >> police say they tried for hours to end the situation peacefully. the suspect was taken to the hospital. details on his condition have not been released. well, a desperate 911 call for help ends with shots fired and a man dead. investigators are now trying to piece together what led up to the shooting. sacramento county sheriff's deputies believe road rage may be to blame. after 2:00 this morning a man called 911. then the dispatcher heard gunfire and the line was disconnected. >> you don't even have to think about it and it's so final. it's so final. and you can't take those actions back. so now this -- you know, this guy is dead. the person that shot him -- his life is probably ruined. i mean because he's going to go to jail. he killed somebody.

>> officers tracked down a vehicle matching the victim's description and found two women in a nearby car with a relative. police arrested him for the shooting. a couple of east bay teens are facing some serious on consequences tonight. they're accused of setting off pipe bombs. that's the bomb squad blowing up one of them. it all started when police got a call of a mailbox being blown up near college park high school last night. 20 minutes later officers say they found an suv with five kids in it in the parking lot of the high school. found inside the suv, another explosive device. >> just -- this was a significant pipe bomb. so i mean, all the damage that you might expect. there was like i said -- the mailbox was completely destroyed. and had anybody been close to it they certainly would have been injured and possibly killed. >> two of the teens were arrested on suspicion of possession of explosives and they were released the their

parents -- to their parents. a supermarket in concord is back open tonight after a hazardous materials scare shut it down. about 20 people at the food max on monument boulevard complained of a chemical smell and told emergency responders they quote felt weird. the fire department and hazmat teams couldn't figure out the source of the smell. no customers were taken to the hospital. a recent effort to provide free muni passes for low income school children in san francisco provoked a lot of debate. now muni officials are talking at another idea that could be even more controversial. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec reports. >> reporter: the san francisco municipal transportation agency is thinking of changing the way you pay for transit. instead of basing fares on age or capability they are thinking of basing prices on a person's income. >> that makes sense. >> i make less money and i feel all right about that. >> i think this is great. >> reporter: they have been

talking for months about allowing low income youths to ride for free. this would go well beyond that. >> we'd have to work on it but there would be some sort of financial record that would have to be prove on the get a discount like this. >> reporter: riders have mixed feels on that. >> no one wants to give up regards. >> the government has all the records what i make anyways. so it's one other branch of government having the records of what i make. >> yeah, i don't want my information scattered here and there. >> reporter: a spokesperson thinks the program would be a wash financially with richer older riders paying more and others pay less. >> we might see an increase in ridership and that could only help. >> reporter: but seniors and disabled people still get a discount of at least 50%. it's federal law. right now the discount is more like 66%. the bay area's lead transit planning body is already conducting a study on the issue which means it could go beyond the muni possibly the b.a.r.t.

all by the new clipper card system but right now it's muni that's full steam ahead. >> we're one of the largest agencies in the country and we'd be one of the first to look at something like this. >> reporter: they will be drawing audiotape plan to present to the board of directors in 2013. if approved it could be put in place the same year. in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5. a south bacon signment car sales -- bay consignment car sales lot once full of cars is suddenly empty. the car owners are looking for the dealer who can't be found. cbs 5 consumer watch reporter julie watts on the dealership that disappeared under a cover of darkness. >> reporter: the business is gone along with the cars. >> a tow truck just came in and towed them off. >> reporter: also missing? their money. >> drove by here every single day. >> reporter: sunnyvale motor cars has disappeared leaving behind a large lot and a lot of angry customers who trusted the business to sell their cars. >> it's theft. >> reporter: todd parsons is

out $28,000. the tech executive says the dealership took his car and gave him a bad check. >> it was all a scam. >> reporter: nursing student chrissy dent wanted to get rid of a $600 a month car payment. she left her vw to sell. >> the dealership here sid that they were going to pay off my loan once the car was sold. >> reporter: dent said they did sell the car and just never paid off the loan. >> i don't have a car and i have to -- still make payments on my loan. >> reporter: just as bad for the man who bought her car. he's now stuck with vehicle he can't register because there's a lien on it. >> we don't have title for the barquette and we don't have a valid -- car yet and we don't have a valid registration. >> reporter: adding to the frustration so far neither insurance companies or the police have been any help. >> i don't think they've even assigned an officer to this particular case. >> my insurance agent said he had never heard of this. >> reporter: it's complicated because the customers had a contract with the dealership

bought 1-point-1 million cas 2020 has been a great year for automakers, u.s. drivers bought 1.1 million cars and trucks in november up 15% from last year and that's the fastest sales pace since january of 2008. but even though more americans are spending money on new vehicles, they're also looking to spend less time and money at the pump. as cbs reporter john blackstone shows us automakers are finally getting the message. >> reporter: this year's l. a. autoshow is bolder -- and greener than ever before.

more than 50 electric, hybrid and over fuel-efficient cars are on display. at a time when style is taken a backseat to fuel economy. edward low editor in chief for motor trend magazine says automakers are paying close attention because more americans are in a buying mood. right now the average age of a car on the road is 11 years a record high. >> now they're in these old cars and they want to buy a new one. they're going to start thinking about hey, how much am i going to pay at the pump? >> reporter: overall consumer interest in alternative fuel vehicles is up 54%. so gm is renewing its commitment to pure electric cars with the chevy spark ev. ford is rolling out eight vehicles that deliver 40 miles per gallon or better. including the 2014 fiesta that has a breakthrough three cylinder engine. the spokesman mickle line. >> it's so small you can actually fit it in a suitcase and it has the performance of a standard engine and is expected
